A stabiliser bar bushing fails without warning: a knock appears in the suspension on bumps, handling deteriorates, and the vehicle begins to wander on the motorway. Rubber bushings in most cars wear out in a year or two, especially on roads with potholes and in contact with petroleum products. Polyurethane bushings from TIMOL last several times longer, hold their geometry in frost, and do not swell in oil. This article explains what makes polyurethane bushings better than rubber, capron, and steel analogues in numbers, how to select hardness for your task, and how to order in Ukraine.

What Polyurethane Bushings Are and Why They Replace Rubber

A bushing is an elastomeric sleeve that connects a metal rod or shaft to the housing, absorbing vibration, noise, and the minor misalignments of the parts. In suspension, a bushing connects the stabiliser bar to the body and allows it to rotate in the eye without metal-to-metal contact. The bushing absorbs minor displacements and damps vibration rather than transmitting it to the body.

Rubber has traditionally been the material for bushings because it is elastic and inexpensive. But rubber wears quickly — abrasion per DIN 53516 is 100-200 mm³ for SBR — ages in oil and road reagents, and loses elasticity in frost, stiffening and transmitting more vibration. Polyurethane with abrasion of 38-39 mm³ lasts 4-5 times longer, withstands oil contact without swelling, and operates in the full range from -60 to +100 °C without changing its properties.

In industrial equipment, bushings function similarly: they take up clearance in articulated joints, guide rollers on shafts, and damp vibration in drive assemblies. Here the requirements are even harder — loads are higher, the environment is more aggressive, and the service schedule is unforgiving. Polyurethane bushings for industrial applications are cast to the exact required bore and outer diameter from a drawing; the free-casting process does not require expensive press tooling. The product range is in the catalogue.

Comparison of Bushing Materials

The choice of bushing material is most clearly seen in a direct comparison of the parameters that determine service life and behaviour in the node.

Polyurethane delivers the best balance among elastomers: the lowest abrasion, the highest tensile strength, and a rebound elasticity that is critical for vibration damping. NBR rubber is better than SBR on oil resistance and upper temperature limit, but wears 4-7 times faster than polyurethane and has lower tensile strength. Capron is stiff and abrasion-resistant, but its rebound elasticity is 5-15 %, meaning it is nearly inelastic — it does not absorb vibration well and chips under impact. Steel does not function as a bushing material at all in dynamic joints where elasticity is required.

Engineer’s tip: for stabiliser bushings on a passenger car on everyday roads, choose a hardness in the middle of the Shore A range. A too-soft bushing sags under sideways load and the stabiliser does not fulfil its function; a too-hard bushing gives overly direct feedback and can cause clicks at low speed when the bar is under low torsion. For a sport or loaded vehicle where increased stiffness is an advantage, choose closer to Shore D. And always check the inner bore diameter against the actual stabiliser bar diameter — an incorrect bore causes play immediately after installation.

Selecting Bushing Hardness for Your Task

Hardness selection is the most important decision when ordering a polyurethane bushing. The hardness range from 50 Shore A to 70 Shore D is set at the casting stage by formulation and cannot be changed by machining. Soft grades in the Shore A range are used for shock absorbers, vibration isolators, silent blocks, and suspension elements where cushioning and flexibility are important. Hard grades close to Shore D are appropriate for press-fit bushings, planetary guides, and industrial sliding bearings where load-carrying capacity and minimum deformation under load matter more than resilience.

The working medium also affects the choice. For oily environments, an oil-resistant formulation with increased chemical stability is selected. For nodes operating in frost, the low-temperature grade retains elasticity down to -60 °C. For food-contact applications, a food-grade formulation is used. The factory technologist selects the formulation for each specific task; it is sufficient to describe the operating conditions and load character. Material selection methodology is covered in detail in the reference information section.

Industrial Applications of Polyurethane Bushings

Beyond automotive suspension, polyurethane bushings work in mining equipment, metallurgical handling machinery, conveyors, press equipment, agricultural machines, and railway rolling stock. Common to all these applications is the combination of high loads, vibration, and an aggressive environment where rubber bushing life is measured in months.

In conveyor and handling equipment, polyurethane bushings on roller shafts damp impact from material falling onto the belt and prevent the shaft from contacting the housing metal-to-metal. In presses and stamps, polyurethane guide bushings work under repetitive impact load and must recover their geometry after each cycle — exactly the task that rebound elasticity of 34-61 % handles. In agricultural machinery, bushings work in dust and mud under frost and heat; the wide operating range and abrasion resistance of polyurethane make it the standard material for this sector.

In the full product range, bushings cover 12 industrial sectors. Factory services for industrial bushing production are listed in the services section.

How to Buy Polyurethane Bushings in Ukraine

To place an order for automotive suspension bushings, supply the vehicle model or the bushing dimensions: outer diameter, bore diameter, and length. To order industrial bushings, supply a drawing or worn sample with dimensions, and describe the operating conditions: load type, working medium, temperature, and rotation or reciprocation character.

TIMOL factory is in Dnipro and ships throughout Ukraine. Standard automotive sizes are in stock; non-standard and industrial dimensions are produced to order using the free-casting process. Both individual replacement parts and production batches are supplied.

For consultation, hardness selection, and ordering, contact TIMOL factory. Engineers will reproduce the bushing for your vehicle or equipment and recommend the hardness for your specific operating conditions.
