# Production of Polyurethane Products

Look around you - you will be amazed at how many polyurethane products surround you: children's toys, smartphone accessories, food containers, medical items. And this is just at the household level. The production of polyurethane products finds wide application in heavy industry, metallurgy, agriculture, and other areas of economic activity.

In many respects, the material surpasses rubber and serves as a worthy replacement for steel parts.

### Benefits of Polyurethane

Interest in PU has existed for a long time. The first experiments were conducted back in the 1930s. Its discoverer was the German chemist Otto Bayer, who later became a famous entrepreneur. His commercial instinct suggested to him that the elastomer derived from crude oil components had a great future.

Although soft PU was used during World War II to protect airplanes from corrosion, the real boom in polyurethane production began in the 1960s. By this time, the American company DuPont was already actively trading in this type of elastomers.

Polyurethane has a multitude of positive qualities:

- does not decompose in aggressive environments. It withstands interaction with gasoline, technical oils, and most acids well. It can remain in saline water for a long time;
- it is resistant to corrosion, fungi, and mold;
- quickly regains shape after compression or other deformation;

PU products quickly adapt to temperature changes. They withstand frosts down to -60ºC and endure heat up to 100ºC. Therefore, equipment with polyurethane parts can be safely installed in outdoor areas.

**The material has no specific chemical odor, does not harm the environment, and is safe for humans.**

Polyurethane wheels do not leave marks on linoleum, parquet, tiles, and other surfaces.

Parts made of PU are appreciated in noisy production environments. They have a soft operation, work quietly, resist impacts, and reduce vibration levels.

Working with this elastomer is convenient: it can be cut, ground, and sawed. It also responds well to polishing.

Polyurethane parts and blocks are economically advantageous for any production: they have a long service life. Products are easy and quick to repair.

### There Are Disadvantages

The disadvantages of polyurethane pale in comparison to its many advantages, but it is worth mentioning them. It may not interact well with all substances. Alkalies, ozone, phosphoric, and methane acids are unfriendly to PU.

It can withstand twisting loads only with great difficulty. But the main drawback of all types of polyurethane is the inability to recycle and problematic disposal.

### Applications and Types

In our country, polyurethane began to be discussed on an industrial scale only in the 1990s. However, production rates have increased significantly. Today, polyurethane production in Ukraine constitutes a considerable share of the domestic economy. One of the main market players is the TIMOL factory.
