# Polyurethane in the Food Industry

Today, polyurethanes are among the most popular polymers in the world. They have unlimited application possibilities. As in other industries, polyurethane is also widely used in the food industry. Polymers excellently retain their properties under high loads and sudden temperature changes. The elastomer does not contain toxic components that could spoil food characteristics and harm health upon contact.

## Features and Properties of Synthetic Elastomers

Synthetic elastomers are used as effective rubber substitutes. The material performs excellently in aggressive environments, as well as under high loads and variable temperatures. Polyurethanes are wear-resistant, durable, and almost immune to aging. The average working temperature ranges from -60 to +100 degrees Celsius. Short-term heating (no more than 24 hours) up to 120 degrees is permissible.

Other advantages include:

- high elasticity and wear resistance;
- absence of contamination of interacting elements;
- ability to absorb vibrations and impacts;
- resistance to dynamic loads;
- high tensile strength;
- low coefficient of friction.

The use of synthetic elastomers has also extended to the food industry. Thanks to the unique characteristics of polyurethane, it can be used not only in the manufacture of various equipment parts but also as a material for elements that come into contact with food.

When interacting with polyurethane, products do not change their smell or taste. Polymers are not affected by various microorganisms. Materials are present at every stage of raw material processing and food production. Due to its resistance to abrasive influence, polyurethane is used in the production of coatings that come into contact with bulk materials. For example, conveyors and loading screws with elastomer coatings reduce grain friction during transportation, thus preserving its quality. In grain production, polyurethane coatings ensure maximum process efficiency and prevent clogging due to low friction. Additionally, they ensure the longevity of the parts themselves.

Many confectionery workshops are equipped with polyurethane conveyor belts. These devices do not absorb oils and fats and have high mechanical strength. In many food productions, conveyor belt cleaning is carried out using polymer scrapers.

Polyurethane is resistant to chemical effects and can retain its original properties over a wide temperature range, allowing elastomers to be used for packaging production.

The modern market offers various brands of polyurethane, differing in parameters such as:

- hardness indicator;
- working temperature range;
- operating environment.

The application of polymers is advisable in any industrial field, as the material helps extend the service life of products and, consequently, saves money. These polymers are also called "eternal rubber" due to their durability. The working life of elastomers is hundreds of times longer than that of rubber. Cast polyurethane products perform best. They are considered flame-resistant materials and do not contain toxic substances.
