# What Polyurethane is Used for Silent Blocks

This article discusses what type of [polyurethane](https://www.timol.com.ua/) is used for silent blocks. You can purchase high-quality and wear-resistant material from our factory, TIMOL. We offer certified raw materials that fully comply with all international quality standards.

## Purpose of Silent Blocks

A silent block is a component of a car's suspension system. This part is crucial for the quality of connections between levers. Under loads or impacts, this part absorbs most of the shock wave and transmits minimal vibrations.

Originally made from rubber, manufacturers now prefer polyurethane due to its unique technical properties. Additionally, the cost of quality rubber components has become higher than polymer products. Therefore, it is more rational to use polymer bushings to extend their service life and reduce the frequency of replacing worn parts.

### Main Advantages of Polyurethane Suspension Components

To understand why polymer parts are so popular, let's examine the main properties of this material:

- Polyurethane is 4 times stronger than its main competitor, rubber. Some drivers might say that a too rigid suspension causes uncomfortable rides, but such a setup is actually safer on challenging roads;
- The material is immune to aggressive environments, including oils, varnishes, and paints;
- The operating temperature ranges from -60 to +80 degrees C (in some cases, with certain additives, the material can withstand even +120 C);
- High elasticity and the ability to return to its original shape after deformations of various degrees.

During operation at low temperatures, rubber hardens and begins to crack, eventually becoming unusable. Polyurethane silent blocks, on the other hand, perform excellently in such extreme conditions. Moreover, these bushings provide better adhesion to metal and almost eliminate cases of delamination. This is another undeniable advantage of this synthetic material.

### What Type of Polyurethane is Needed for Bushing Production?

So, what polyurethane is best for silent blocks? A medium-hardness material is needed for manufacturing this part. If too hard a material is used, the suspension becomes almost "rigid," making the vehicle less comfortable for the driver. To ensure the desired quality of the future product, select raw materials with a hardness rating of 65-70 Shore. This will achieve optimal technical qualities and wear resistance while maintaining maximum elasticity for high vehicle maneuverability.

### Silent Block Manufacturing Process

Once you have determined which polyurethane is used for silent blocks, you can consider the manufacturing technology for this part. We describe the simplest method, which can even be performed in a makeshift setting. However, it is better to use special equipment if you want to establish full-scale production.

First, prepare the ingredients:

- Polymer of the required quality;
- Granulated hardener;
- Anti-adhesive lubricant.

The work should be carried out in a dry room. Although polyurethane is not afraid of moisture, it can negatively affect the entire production process.

Note: When mixing the solution, the mass should be homogeneous and free of air bubbles, which can later become a serious problem and negatively affect the quality of the product!

First, lubricate the mold with grease to make it easier to separate the product later. Pour the liquid polymer into one container and the hardener into another. Then, heat both molds to 120 degrees. Keep the solution in this state for half an hour, then cool it to 60 degrees C. This manipulation is necessary to prevent air bubbles from forming on the surface. The hardener must remain heated continuously.

Next, mix both ingredients. They must be stirred to ensure the solution is homogeneous. This process should take no more than 10 minutes. After obtaining the mixture, let it "rest" for a minute, then pour it into molding trays that match the geometry and dimensions of the future product.

Leave the solution for half an hour, then reheat it to 100 degrees and maintain this mode for 2-6 hours. Then cool it to 40 degrees C and carefully remove the finished parts.

The ready-made parts can be used after a week. They should be stored in warmth for all 7 days. As a result, you get durable products capable of serving for a long time.

Of course, large manufacturers have a different and fully automated technology for producing parts using special equipment. Therefore, the products are more perfect and of higher quality, incomparable to those produced by amateur methods.
