# Hydrocyclone - What Is It?

Very often, special devices with automatic or manual control are used to purify water from impurities and various inclusions.

## How Does a Hydrocyclone Work?

In production, there is often a need to separate small impurities from larger ones. This allows for the separation of mineral grains and improves the quality of the concentrate. A hydrocyclone is a device designed for purifying water from impurities, thickening flotation products and sludges, and clarifying return waters. The mechanism works by separating solid particles in a rotating fluid flow. The device is widely used in the oil, metallurgical, and coal industries. The unit features a rather simple design.

The filter is shaped like a cone or cylinder, with liquid fed into a side opening. The mechanism then begins to make circular movements, during which large inclusions are thrown against the filter walls. The separated particles roll into a special cylinder, and the impurity-free water is fed upwards for further use. All this occurs automatically, as long as water is supplied under pressure.

During the separation process, there is no chemical change in the composition of substances. High-tech materials (polyurethane, metal) treated with special anti-corrosion coatings are used to manufacture hydrocyclones. The mechanisms can operate as standalone units or be used to create entire complexes. The main advantages of the products include:

- simple design;
- durability;
- effective purification;
- affordable price;
- ease of use;
- high productivity;
- absence of rotating mechanisms;
- low installation and maintenance costs;
- ability to form automated installations.

The disadvantages of the device include increased wear of working parts and pumps. To extend the service life of hydrocyclones, many manufacturers line the interior with rubber or stone casting. Hydrocyclones are highly efficient devices that are low-cost, easy to use, and maintain. They were first developed in 1939 and used at the Dutch coal enrichment plant. Serial production in the USSR began in 1956.

### Single-Body Hydrocyclone - What Is It?

Single-body models consist of a cylindrical part with a nozzle for material supply. They are ideal for water preparation in drip irrigation. The mechanisms ensure quick and effective removal of solid particles from various suspensions. The device can operate in horizontal, vertical, and inclined positions. During operation, two spiral flows (internal and external) form in the body. As a result, an air column forms along the axis. Liquid supply and discharge can be carried out through one or several nozzles. The optimal pressure is 5-10 m.

To increase efficiency, single-body products are combined into groups of several parallel-connected devices. The number of devices is calculated based on their throughput and the size of the processed particles.

#### Battery Hydrocyclone - What Is It For?

This model excels at separating solid particles from liquid. It can be used for reagent-free water treatment in recirculating water systems. Battery hydrocyclones are very convenient to operate and maintain. The construction consists of single bodies combined into a removable block using special plates. In turn, the plates divide the construction into several sections:

- sludge and receiving chambers;
- clarified product chamber.

Initially, the product is fed under pressure into the pre-cleaning chamber, where large inclusions are separated. The pre-cleaned mixture is fed through the drain chamber for fine cleaning. The purified suspension enters the collector, and sediments are removed from the device through sand nozzles. This mechanism has several advantages:

- reliable operation in separating various suspensions;
- quick cleaning of all openings;
- high productivity;
- impeccable quality of purification and separation;
- low likelihood of washing device destruction.

### Features of Unit Operation

Proper operation extends the device's service life and ensures its efficient performance. It is crucial to promptly eliminate all malfunctions. If vibration occurs, stop the device and check the cleanliness of the nozzles and pipelines. They may be clogged with suspension or foreign objects. In such cases, cleaning should be performed. To prevent material from entering the nozzles, a special mesh should be placed in the container from which the pulp is drawn. The mesh openings should be smaller than the diameter of the sand nozzle.

When using the units, monitor the uniform distribution of the incoming suspension. Hydrocyclones are used not only for water purification but also for suspension classification. The choice and calculation of the number of devices should be based on their application goals. The simple design allows for the DIY construction of a hydrocyclone for sand water purification. However, to ensure efficient operation and long service life, it is better to purchase ready-made devices from reliable suppliers.
