# Lining of Grain Ducts

Increasing the operational lifespan of equipment and reducing grain losses is facilitated by timely [lining](https://www.timol.com.ua/futerovka-valov) of grain ducts.

Polyurethane is the most advantageous material for this purpose. It significantly outperforms rubber, is environmentally friendly, and safe for humans. The key is to choose the right grade of raw material and perform the work according to accepted quality standards.

### Polyurethane Lining Technologies

Lining involves applying a protective layer to the internal parts of equipment. This can be done in several ways:

- hot adhesion;
- ready-made inserts;
- lining sheets.

Hot adhesion is the most expensive but also the most durable method. The applied polymer layer and the metal of the grain duct form a strong monolithic bond. Both materials behave similarly during expansion, preventing chipping, cracking, and other damage.

Lining with ready-made inserts is convenient because the work is completed very quickly. Inserts, pre-cast at the "TIMOL" factory, are installed in the equipment. They are mounted using flanges. This connection allows for free application, so during heating, the insert and pipe expand independently, considering the material's characteristics. This type of lining is beneficial during the assembly of the installation.

Covering with PU sheets is the longest method. Sheets are fastened with elevator bolts. In places where bolts are installed, bulging may occur. In complex chute designs, achieving perfect sheet alignment is difficult. These shortcomings can lead to the protective layer being compromised and equipment damage. We recommend using this on flat sections.

### Why Rubber is Inferior to Polyurethane

For a long time, equipment in elevators was protected with rubber. This coating is much cheaper than polyurethane but has serious drawbacks.

The rubber layer wears out quickly, resulting in so-called "pockets" where grain gets stuck. Work stops due to resulting blockages.

Rubber significantly slows down grain movement, reducing the enterprise's productivity and profitability.

### Advantages of Polyurethane

Polyurethane is a synthetic material derived from crude oil products. By adding special ingredients, raw materials of different hardness and structure can be obtained. This allows for selecting the most suitable grade for different lining methods.

Polyurethane coating increases the wear resistance of equipment. It does not deform under ultraviolet light. It is not destroyed by radiation or microbes.

It withstands temperature fluctuations: extreme heat (+100°C) and cold down to -60°C.

Among other advantages:

- resistance to mold and fungi;
- reduces vibrations;
- decreases noise;
- odorless;
- provides good sliding: reduces transport, loading, and unloading time;
- grain is not crushed, so the grade is not compromised.

A coating thickness of 4 mm is sufficient for grain ducts, depending on the elevator's capacity, to significantly extend the equipment's lifespan.

Polyurethane lining is economically beneficial for enterprises. It allows for reducing grain losses by up to 4%. On the scale of an elevator's throughput, these percentages translate into hundreds of tons, equating to millions in profits.

### How to Choose the Right Raw Material

Choosing the "right" material is crucial for successful lining. Suitability can be assessed in several ways. Try scratching the polyurethane layer. Quality coating will not show marks. If scratches appear or thin shavings come off, such a coating will not last long.

We advise paying attention to the specified material characteristics. Hardness is important. It is determined by the Shore scale. It is better to choose softer ones from class A. They are less prone to wear than PU class D.
